Who this workshop is for & what you'll get out of it

In this one-hour workshop, Laura Portwood-Stacer will share her time-tested method for increasing your odds of scholarly publishing success, whether you're writing your first book or building on past academic publishing experiences in hopes of taking more control over the process this time around.

At this workshop, you'll learn how to:

  • showcase your project in ways that will make it stand out to your top-choice presses
  • compare publishers to identify which are the best fit for your project and goals
  • determine how many publishers you should be reaching out to
  • decide whether to submit your book proposal before writing your full manuscript or waiting until your draft is complete
  • get answers to any other questions you have

If you've ever been frustrated by the publishing process because you think you have to do exactly what your academic mentors did or rely on personal connections to get your foot in the door, this workshop is for you.

You'll learn a new way of approaching the publishing process that gives you more agency and fits with how scholarly book publishing actually works in 2025.

This workshop is about publishing academic books with university presses and other scholarly publishers. If you're not writing a scholarly book or hoping to publish with a scholarly press, this probably isn't the best workshop for you.
